Mi Kyoung Yun
Bio/Statement
”I graduated from Art University and majored in a Western painting in 1983. I started teaching an art at Hongeik academy for a year before graduation.
A year after, during I run my own art academy, many of my students won the prize for drawing contests so I was recognized by some elementary school and I taught elementary school students as a special art teacher in 1987.
For extending my talents, I studied about Japanese and Illustration design in Japan for over 4 years. And then I went to the U.S. to get married my boyfriend who goes to the same university and major.
I’ve had two children, 20-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy since at the end of 1992. It was absolutely hard time almost every each day because I wasn’t good at English and there were no any siblings or family in the U.S.
Although I studied specific major, I couldn’t do the art project a lot and I couldn’t afford to send my kids to day care service.
I barely started doing art project teaching some students at home studio during I breastfed my first child.
However, it was pretty hard to get a great work of art raising two kids and suffering from immigration life with my husband.
Roughly, I couldn’t draw because whenever I drew, I usually showed my true mind through the painting and I even hesitated to show my painting to others.
In the meantime, some of my students won the grand prize whenever they participated in art contests and it made my art class bigger than before. I taught over 40 students and many of my students, who were taught by me, went to outstanding art university.
One day, president of New York Artist Association Joo- Okgeun advised me that “No matter how you suffer from your life, don’t put the brush down and keep drawing little by little whenever you have a time. Besides, I volunteered to teach an art at Zen Center for 15 years and also I did it at my daughter’s elementary school for several years on art parts. Through this volunteering, I think I could control my mind and I’ve drawn bit by bit. In consequence, I’ve exhibited my painting through group exhibition since 2000.
Although I’ve been working Adult home care service now to support some art supplies, I feel great about helping adults. Of course I’ve been teaching students as an art teacher now. I’ve dreamed of being a painter and an art teacher since when I was 10 years old. I hope to live my life to the full in order to create such a remarkable painting.
For me and for my family…”
