Cecil Kang
2019 Solo Exhibition
May 21 - 28, 2019
Opening Reception: May 23 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Cecil Kang was the first-ever Asian to win the renowned Chelsea International Fine Art Competition in 2005 where four of her works, titled Sprit Series I, II and Cadenza Series III, IV, were chosen from over 5,000 works submitted by artists from all over the world.
Emanating a sense of purity and transparency, the Spirit Series expresses the beauty encapsulated in the original and unaffected state of human nature through gentle, flowing brush strokes that emulate gestures of the spirit. The Cadenza Series, on the other hand, showcases a unique technique that uses layers of texture punctuated with bold and intense brushstrokes of dark and rich hues to convey the destructive cycle of emotions individuals experience in life – deep misery, isolation, solitude, love, chaos and anxiety.
Born in South Korea, Cecil Kang was raised in a family of prominent musicians and artists. Cecil’s innate talent in music and art was discovered early in her life as she excelled as a pianist, composer and painter, however, not until much later in her adulthood she was invigorated with the desire to express herself in her abstract art works, through which she emanates the beauty of spirit, beauty of heart, and beauty of mind within every human being that could only have been created by God.
Cecil Kang has been invited to group and solo exhibitions globally, including: the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York; The Page Gallery in Seoul, Korea for the presentation of the CEO’s Art Collection; Busan City Museum of Modern Art in Korea; Phoenix Gallery in New York; Korean Cultural Service in New York; Soo Gallery in Busan, Korea; Busan International Art Exhibition sponsored by UNICEF; International Art Fair in Coex in Seoul, Korea; Cultural Center of Los Angeles; Gallery Thirty-One in Seoul, Korea; Gallery Sun of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea; Open Gallery in New York; the Hansesaal Luenen in Luenen, Germany; and Contemporary Art Gallery in Barcelona, Spain.
Cecil Kang has received coverage in many media outlets including radio stations, newspapers and magazines. She was featured in the “Finding the World of Art” in Luxury Magazine published in Korea for her solo exhibition at Soo Gallery.
As a member of the Contemporary Artists of New York, Cecil Kang also is passionate about supporting non-profit charities that promote the arts. In her past three solo exhibitions, Cecil has donated all of the sales proceeds to charitable organizations including Love Violin for Children, a non-profit organization helping to introduce the performing arts to underprivileged children.
Cecil Kang studied at the Art Students League in New York with Professor Knox Martin, who described her pieces as “intriguing and engagingly complex compositions in which she suppresses details while unexpectedly revealing states of mind with powerful brushstrokes and an unrivaled symphony of abstract bursts of color.”
