Taemo Yang
Taemo Yang, currently a Professor at Dankook University, makes collage and mixed media works that utilize different materials with tranlucent or opaque qualities as to demonstrate the density of air and to acknowledge the elements in nature and their importance to our human existence.
Artist Statement:
“I stand silently in a bushy wayside thicket, by the trees and creepers that creep over ‘randomly.’ I humbly think of ‘this’ as if it were a friend of mine whom I had neglected for a while. How has this come to be here, and how has it taken such a shape? I think of only this in a world where nothing is the same. Things of both this and not this such as water, wind, sky, air, and earth thus appear on the stage. This might be a ‘dance’ against the resistance of air, energy, and density packed close though seemingly transparent, or rather an abandonment of itself to the resistance of air. For it is a world just being done with neither purpose nor cause, a place where nothing stands still. What else can I call it other than a ‘dance’? This cannot be translated as ‘war’ or ‘battle.’ Even while flowing and transforming ceaselessly without being fixed, this takes a ‘name’ as if it were ‘itself.’ This is but a landscape of the whole, not an individual. Misreading becomes a shield or protection, and now the human world unfolds. I call this a tree, a creeper, an unknown plant. This in terms of relation, energy, and flow disappears while obtaining a name, difference and inner identity, as well as a coordinate of ‘itself.’ While contemplating this and its ‘being,’ I face such things disposed and removed behind misreading as margins that scarcely met a gaze amid the concentration on being, silence left unheard amongst the blurting of sounds, death uncared for as a result of our living, and the leaving forgotten while staying. Only in thinking of the outside of human life ousted by belief, conviction, and evidence, the life that I could never care for, does this appear. I shall have to return ‘again’ to the human world, restraining a mind traversing between human order and anti-human landscape. One might be lost, lost for words, and lost for sight by hovering too long a time.”
